The county of Norfolk, England, forms part of East Anglia. In medieval times it was one of the most densely populated and prosperous parts of the country, and Norwich was the second largest city in the country. The wealth of the county was founded on its agriculture - principally its wool.

The visitor to the county today cannot help but be struck by the many prominent churches, built medieval times with the profits of the wool trade. In Norwich itself there are many flint churches - far more than are now needed for Sunday worship - and in places they are built almost next to each other.

The layout of the county today is largely based on the needs of its agricultural past. Norwich, together with the major towns of Thetford, Great Yarmouth and King's Lynn, are interspersed by a series of market towns, perhaps 10 or 15 miles apart. Each farmer and farming village need to have a market centre to go to on a regular basis, for all the normal commercial activities associated with making a living from the land.

This site is under construction as a guide to the county of Norfolk. It is sponsored by Poppyland Publishing, specialist local history publishers for the county.
