DVDs & videos from Poppyland Productions

There are currently seven great DVDs, two of which are still also available as videos. Several more titles are in production.

These are produced under the name 'Poppyland Productions' - but it's still us at Poppyland Publishing. They'll be found in shops local to the title - or you can order directly by clicking on the 'shopping basket' icon. Prices include VAT.

Overstrand - Our Village

In this DVD the village of Overstrand on the north east Norfolk coast tells its own story through the words of residents, a reconstruction of the village in 1838, expert comment and visits to some of the locations and buildings of the village. A traditional fishing and agricultural village until the end of the 19th century, the coming of the railway and many of the contemprary glitterati of London would bring about many changes. Former Anglia Television presenter and local resident Eddie Anderson links the story together.

Wymondham - Born and Bred (DVD)

History and nostalgia, there's an hour and twenty minutes of reminiscences of Wymondham and district on this DVD. Eleven local residents who grew up in the town recall the years of the Second World War, farming and half a century of changes, schooldays, horse, churches, chapels and trade in town - and lots more.

Wymondham - Born and Bred is the personal recollections of a number of townsfolk. The DVD, divided into 10 chapters, is a selection from nearly 15 hours of recordings. Whether you've lived all yor life in Wymondham, grew up there and have 'emigrated' or have a more general interest in East Anglia's history, we hope you'll enjoy this DVD.

East Anglia - The Wild Side: Field and Woodland (DVD)

International wildlife film-maker Mike Linley presents three wonderful DVDs about the region and its natural history. Field and Woodland takes us to the reserves and the open spaces of the counties of the region to meet an amazing wealth of bird and animal life.

East Anglia - The Wild Side: River and Broad (DVD)

River and Broad is the second in the East Anglia - The Wild Side series, with international wild-life cameraman Mike Linley taking us to the waterways of East Anglia. With our many rivers and the unique Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, the largest such area in Europe, there are many animals and birds to see and enjoy.

A wonderful close-up opportunity to see grass snakes biting their way out of their eggs; the elusive bittern as it seeks to camouflage itself amongst the reeds - and a spectacular variety of other birds and animals of the waterways, broads and ponds. East Anglia - The Wild Side: Coast and Estuary (DVD)

Coast and Estuary is the third in the East Anglia - The Wild Side series, with international wild-life cameraman Mike Linley taking us around the coastline and up the estuaries of the region. With our cliffs and mudflats, open beaches and lines of dunes, these specialist environments are home to many creatures.

Exploring the Norfolk Village (DVD)

Christopher Barringer contributed Exploring the Norfolk Village to the Norfolk Origins series of books, and now personally introduces the villages in the book on this DVD. Whether you're looking for an introduction to the book or want to explore the villages further through specially recorded video or aerial photography, the DVD is an ideal companion. He also visits the Norfolk Record Office to introduce the viewer to using the centre and illustrate some of the source material used in his researches.

Exploring the Norfolk Village takes 14 villages across the county, representing different types of settlement and different regions of Norfolk, to introduce approaches to the local study of our settlements. Great Yarmouth - History, Herrings, Holidays (DVD)

Great Yarmouth - History, Herrings, Holidays on DVD or video Great Yarmouth is a harbour and town with a fascinating history. In medieval times it was the great base for trade across the North Sea to Europe - and was the largest herring fishing port in the world. Its tourist industry flourished from the early 19th century.

This video tells Yarmouth's story from Roman times through to the present day - with historic film, animated graphics and the comments of experts on the town's history. An added bonus is the singing of Sam Larner, a Yarmouth fisherman from 1892. Bryonie Pritchard provides the commentary and Robbie Nash the musical accompaniment.

The DVD carries a bonus section with a set of aerial pictures of Great Yarmouth, taken during filming for the production. Click to see a trailer for the DVD.

Poppyland (DVD)

Poppyland is the story of theatre critic and travel writer Clement Scott arriving in north Norfolk in August, 1883, giving the area the name Poppyland and popularising it through his travel column in the Daily Telegraph. It is through his popularisation of the area that north Norfolk is as we know it today.

Actress Bryonie Pritchard, who has herself sung Scott's "Garden of Sleep" on stage, narrates the story, and Michael Strobel provides Scott's voice to bring his poems and prose to life. With music from Alistair Murphy, developed from Isidore de Lara's original Victorian theme, and film from Cromer, Overstrand, London and even Niagara Falls, the life of Clement Scott and 'Maid of the Mill' Louie Jermy can be enjoyed on screen.

The DVD menu proivdes the chance to hear Isidore de Laura's 'Garden of Sleep' song in its entirety.

The Cromer Lifeboats (DVD)

The Cromer Lifeboats tells the story of this famous lifeboat station, its crews and its supporters over the two centuries since it was founded in 1804. Henry' Shrimp' Davies recalls dramatic rescues in which he was involved. Still photographs from early years are complemented by modern footage of the 'Ruby and Arthur Reed II' lifeboat and the inshore lifeboat.

Recollections of convoy 559 and the English Trader, including survivor Bill Redman, are part of the story from the war years. The three gold medals and the four silver medals won by lifeboat legend Henry Blogg in fifty years of service are recalled through animation and recollection.

As bonus tracks the DVd contains the video sequences made for the audio-visual presentation viewed by visiotrs to the Cromer lifeboat house.
