The Magic Lantern - A Victorian Entertainment
The effect you see here is made from a set of four lantern slides. Again, the full effect of can't be shown here, but we hope it's a reasonable presentation. The first part dissolves through three slides, from day to night and then to the eruption. The fourth part of the effect is produced using a slide with a rotating disc, projecting just that part of the picture from the second lens of the lantern.
This one is a fairly simple slipping slide, made with two piece of glass. One piece is move to reveal a new part of the picture and to hide a part of the picture.
Even more simply, this slipping slide moves a blackout away to reveal the picture - and the danger of being a street trader!
