The Albums Series

Some of our titles are best described as 'Albums', collections of pictures of a town or district, but always carefully researched and captioned.

There are quite a few books in this series, but a number are currently out of print. The titles below are available at present.

A Cromer Miscellany

Philip Vicary was a faithful recorder of the town of Cromer in photographs and paintings through the 20th century. In addition he took the opportunity to make copies of many earlier pictures, both photographs and lithographs and it is because of his efforts that many of those pictures have come through to the present day. Lots of the photos we now see in Cromer books today were preserved because of Philip's diligence.

In A Cromer Miscellany his son Adrian brings together a selection from his own photos and those of his father. Some have not appeared in print before, such as the glorious images of steam locomotives at Cromer Beach station and the pictures of the first diesel cars to provide the Norwich-Sheringham service. It's a book that will be needed for any north Norfolk collection

A Mundesley Album

Mundesley author Eric Reading's first edition of A Mundesley Album was published in 1985. There has been a continuing demand for the title ever since it went out of print and Eric and Paul Damen worked together to produce this new edition. Eric was not to see it come to fruition but Paul continued the work and we are pleased to present once again this portrait of the village of Mundesley in the late 19th and 20th century.

More Norfolk Churches from the Air

After the great interest in Mike Page's first selection of photos of Norfolk's churches, here's a further choice from the images taken by the country's premier aerial photographer. He's been the 'wings over Norfolk' for several decades and he's delved into the collection to bring us more glorious pictures - and help answer the question,"Why wasn't our church in the first collection?"

From Hemsby to Hindringham, Wiggenhall to Walcott, we hope you'll find your local church featured - and of course the book will guide you to make a journey to the many joyous and generally medieval locations.

Exploring Paston Country

The Paston family, perhaps best known through The Paston Letters were influential in their ownership of land in the county of Norfolk from the 14th to the 17th centuries. Author Lucy Care, herself a resident of the village of Paston, has written a fascinating introduction to the history of the family and combined it with walks and information on the places that can be visited today, to understand the family's heritage.

The Peddars Way - Walking the Norfolk Long Distance Trail

Bruce Robinson, a former journalist, was walking the Peddars Way long before it became a National Trail. Sometimes, he even took his children along for a camping and walking expedition. Those early experiences obviously rubbed off on the family - son Mike has continued to walk the Way with his father.

Together they bring you their favourite scenes and reminiscences from their many years of walking, in the photographs and recollections recorded in this book. Whether you've walked the trail, are thinking of making the journey - or just want to enjoy it from you armchair, this book is for you.

The Norfolk National Trail is made up of the Peddars Way and the Coast Path; Poppyland Publishing brings you a book for each section. Bruce and Mike Robinson introduce the books to you with a click.

Poppyland in Pictures

Poppyland in Pictures was first published in 1983, to commemorate a hundred years from when Clement Scott, the eminent Victorian theatre critic and travel writer, first came to north Norfolk, coined the name Poppyland and wrote about the area in his columns in the Daily Telegraph. This second edition now has some illustrations in colour and new material which has come to light since the first edition.

A visit by the publishers to the library of the University of Rochester in New York State gave the opportunity to investigate the letters and correspondence Scott collected over the years. This has cast new light on his work as a writer and theatre critic, but in the context of the Poppyland story, it has also confirmed many of the stories about the famous and infamous of the late Victorian theatre world coming to the Cromer area.

We have also produced a DVD and video Poppyland to go with the book, to bring it to life with words and song. For more details on this, see our 'DVDs and Videos' page

Cromer Pier

This title records the history of Cromer Pier from its earliest mention in 1391 through to the end of the 20th century. The current pier has celebrated its birthday this year in 2001 and this book is a wonderful record in words, photographs and diagrams of one of Norfolk's most famous structures. With less than 50 seaside piers left around the coast of the British Isles, this is a fascinating story of the British desire to build out over the sea!
